Fr. Pat Reynolds shares his vocation story with the Serra Club on June 26. COURTESY OF SERRA CLUB

Laity supporting vocations through Serra Club

BY LAVIDA MISCHEL, SPECIAL TO THE WESTERN KENTUCKY CATHOLIC

On June 26, Serra Club members gathered to worship at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish’s 5:30 Mass and were excited to hear the vocation story of Fr. Pat Reynolds in the parish hall.

The Diocese of Owensboro’s Serra Club began in 1963 and its current president is Ernie Taliaferro. Serrans meet twice a month. The first meeting takes place at Briarpatch in Owensboro and the second meeting takes place at various scheduled parishes, beginning with Mass and followed by the vocation story of the pastor. The Serra Club is accepting new members; however, membership is not required to attend the vocation story gathering. All are welcome!

Upcoming dates are Aug. 21, p.m. at Precious Blood in Owensboro, followed by the vocation story of Fr. Carl McCarthy; Sept. 26 noon Mass at Blessed Mother in Owensboro, followed by the vocation story of Fr. Brandon Williams; and an October date to be announced at St. Mary Magdalene in Sorgho, followed by the vocation story of Fr. Jamie Dennis.

Serra USA was formed in 1935, when a small group of lay people in Seattle decided to form an organization with a purpose to promote and foster vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life. They chose Fr. Junipero Serra, the great missionary, as their patron and named the organization Serra Club. Serra’s additional purpose is to assist members in their own vocation, and in recognizing and responding to God’s call to holiness in Jesus Christ and to the Holy Spirit.

Please consider joining Serra Club in prayer for vocations. To become a member, contact Ernie Taliaferro (270-302-5355) or Lavida Mischel (270-929-2740) or any Serra Club member.

Lavida Mischel is the administrative assistant for St. Mary Magdalene Parish and a Serra Club member.
